The Newly Identified & Questioning Autistic Peer-Support Workshop

Are you seeking connection with fellow newly identified autistic individuals who understand the journey that you’re on? Are you exploring the idea that you may be autistic but aren’t quite sure yet?

Are you looking for a teacher, mentor, or coach who is autistic and understands the challenges of living in a neurotypical society?

Join us to explore and embrace your autistic self in my 5-week autistic peer-support coaching program!

Whether you have received a formal diagnosis or have self-identified yourself as autistic, you have spent years hiding your autistic identity while trying to fit into neuronormative expectations. Our aim is to emphasize self-advocacy, unmasking, and developing self-care and self-regulation strategies. Together, we will embark on a journey of compassion and fulfillment on our own terms.

My peer-support coaching group workshops aim to cultivate a community and bring together like-minded autistic individuals who are ready to embrace their authenticity. We strive to enhance our self-awareness and live genuinely by unmasking. Every participant will have the opportunity to share, speak, contribute, and develop within the small autistic communities we create. All sessions take place virtually on Zoom.

  • Taking part in Matthew's workshop for late identified autistics was my first important step towards creating a neuro affirming life for myself.

    Melanie - Amsterdam

  • I felt so supported and understood by Matthew and all the wonderful people in my group. With that support, I was able to take steps to advocate for myself and my needs in ways that I probably wouldn’t have done on my own.

    Ryan - Vienna

In the safe and supportive space of the workshop, we investigate various aspects of the autistic experience.

We start by acknowledging and valuing special interests, viewing them as sources of knowledge and skill, as well as avenues for self-expression and personal fulfillment.

We honor the deep joy that comes from engaging with these passions, which provide meaning and happiness in our lives.

As we continue, we explore the complex areas of interoception and sensory experiences, recognizing the heightened sensitivity that can often accompany our autistic neurology. By understanding our unique sensory profiles, we enhance our ability to navigate our environments, developing strategies to manage overwhelming stimuli and creating spaces that support our well-being.

Next, we investigate the intricacies of emotional experiences, honoring the varied ways autistic individuals perceive and express emotions. This exploration promotes self-awareness and equips us with tools for emotional regulation, helping us achieve a sense of balance and stability. Together, we will navigate these complex connections, acknowledging the mixed emotions of grief and joy that arise from understanding one’s autistic identity. This journey involves exploring the subtleties of this realization, while providing a space for open discussions, validation, and healing.

Considerable emphasis is placed on triggers and well-being, acknowledging the difficulties associated with meltdowns, shutdowns, and autistic burnout. We collaborate to learn strategies that help us slow down, prioritize self-care, and build resilience when faced with overwhelming situations. Understanding that triggers can greatly affect our well-being, we will work together to create strategies and coping mechanisms that support self-care, emotional regulation, and personal growth. By recognizing our triggers and developing tools to manage them, we empower ourselves to live more fulfilling and balanced lives.

Another important part of our journey is examining the concept of autistic masking. We recognize the energy spent in hiding our autistic traits to fit into a neurotypical environment, while also valuing the importance of embracing our true selves. Our aim is to promote acceptance and equip ourselves with strategies to navigate social situations authentically and advocate for our needs.

We will also delve into self-advocacy, helping each individual find their voice and assert their rights. Balancing intense focus and periods of distraction becomes crucial, as we learn to leverage our strengths while addressing challenges. We explore ways to reconcile hyperactivity and impulsivity with the need for routine, discovering approaches to satisfy our desire for new experiences while retaining a sense of comfort and familiarity.

In my 5-week autistic peer support coaching workshop, we will foster a secure and inviting atmosphere for individuals recently identified as autistic to experience comfort, affirmation, and the chance to express their unique voices while undergoing personal growth. We will collaboratively explore the complexities of previous relationships, acknowledge the nuanced process of self-discovery, and develop strategies to manage triggers in ways that enhance resilience and empower ourselves.

  • Matthew is a kindhearted, skilled facilitator, makes the space welcoming, sets clear boundaries, and is passionately committed to his work and to his clients.

    Luz - Italy

  • Life-changing. Matthew is very good at what he does – I was right at the start of my understanding of my neurodivergence when I took the course and the learning was intense and immediately practical, the lessons I learned improving my life tangibly within weeks.

    Caro - Cambridge

I intentionally maintain a small size for each autistic peer-support coaching workshop, with 3 to 7 participants in addition to myself.

This approach ensures that all group members have ample chances to express their thoughts, engage in open dialogue, reflect on their experiences, and contribute actively to the sessions.

Although each group session is scheduled for 90 minutes, the dynamic discussions frequently carry on longer. Depending on the specific program, these groups typically convene once a week for a duration of 5 weeks.

Participants benefit from not only invaluable in-group sessions but also a dedicated WhatsApp group crafted specifically for their cohort. This platform encourages continuous communication and connection between sessions, creating a supportive network. Additionally, I provide complimentary personal 1-on-1 support and coaching via WhatsApp throughout the program. This individualized assistance enhances the experience by bridging the gap between sessions and ensuring each participant receives tailored guidance.

My autistic group workshops are thoughtfully designed to serve as safe spaces for autistic humans. You are invited to express yourself authentically, without the pressure to mask or hide your identity. Feel empowered to be as visible or vocal as you choose, celebrating your true self. In these groups, you can stim freely and be at ease among fellow autistic individuals and myself, sharing experiences and life narratives openly. Many participants have acknowledged these groups as genuinely transformative, as reflected in the testimonials available on my website.

As the AUTISTIC facilitator of the group, I create an environment that encourages organic participation and meaningful interaction. The sessions are not structured lectures with slides but rather vibrant and dynamic spaces where everyone's contributions are valued and respected. While we adhere to a set syllabus and maintain an order to the material discussed, it is important to emphasize that these coaching groups do not serve as a replacement for therapy or medical advice. They provide valuable support and guidance but do not substitute the specialized care and expertise of therapists or medical professionals.
